A Statewide Collection Map: Results from the Statewide Assessment of Monographs and Electronic Resources in Illinois

Authors: Munroe, Mary H.; Braxton, Susan M.; Covey, Carol; Hamilton, David; Schwartz, Vanette; Slough, Marlene; Tracy, Carla

Abstract / Summary: The Statewide Assessment project was begun in 2000 and used an automated assessment tool called ICAS (Interactive Collection Analysis Service). ICAS uses data from either the OCLC records in an individual institution’s online catalog or the OCLC WorldCat database. ICAS provides information and reports at the levels of individual libraries, and different combinations of libraries. Our report analyzed the Illinois collection and individual library collections based on the call number ranges (quite similar to the National Shelflist Count ranges). The analysis was done by division (50 large subject areas such as Language and Literature), by category (500 call number ranges), by age, by subject (5,000 descriptors), and by 32 languages. The counts are done by title, not item, which gives a more accurate picture of the holdings in a library by eliminating multiple copies of a title in an individual library. Studies were done by age, by uniqueness and by overlap to identify those subjects, which contain a large number of unique items and conversely by the gaps in materials present in the libraries and in the state. The project was funded by the ICCMP and by contributions from participating libraries. The final reports were delivered in the Fall of 2004.

Bibliografía de la Gran Chiquitanía=Bibliography of the Gran Chiquitanía: A Guide to Materials Related to the Chiquitos Indigenous Group in Bolivia

Title: Bibliografía de la Gran Chiquitanía=Bibliography of the Gran Chiquitanía: A Guide to Materials Related to the Chiquitos Indigenous Group in Bolivia; ILLIPATHS No. 10

Authors: Harrison, Laura E.

Abstract / Summary: The purpose of this pathfinder is to provide students with a list of selected works related to the Gran Chiquitanía, its citizens, and their history. The items compiled in this bibliography cover a wide range of topics including politics, history, literature, and social conditions. Also included are works dealing with agriculture, ecology, and music. Resources listed are articles, books, conference proceedings, sound recordings, theses and dissertations, and websites. Not all of the items are held by the University of Illinois Library, and while the bibliography is not comprehensive, it does serve as a starting point for researchers.
This volume, No. 10, was largely compiled by searching the University of Illinois
Library’s online catalog as well as WorldCat. The Library of Congress Subject Headings used to find these materials are listed on the next page. The resources found were complemented by those listed on the compact disc entitled Bibliografía Chiquitana: Inventario de títulos bibliográficos relacionados con la Chiquitanía, published by El Museo de Historia de Santa Cruz, La Organización Indígena de la Chiquitanía (OICH), and El Servicio Holandés de Cooperación al Desarrollo (SNV) in 2007. This disc, which also contains several photographs of the Chiquitos region and people, is itself included in the bibliography to augment the information available to researchers of the Gran Chiquitanía.
A digital copy of this pathfinder will be sent to Dr. Jesús Muñoz Diez of the Universidad Católica Boliviana San Pablo at Chiquitos, to be added to their library, and to the Biblioteca y Archivo Nacional de Bolivia in Sucre.

The Library as Strategic Investment: Results of the University of Illinois "Return on Investment" Study From the Director's Perspective

Title: The Library as Strategic Investment: Results of the University of Illinois "Return on Investment" Study From the Director's Perspective

Authors: Kaufman, Paula

Abstract / Summary: In an era of increased concern about accountability in higher education, it is critical for the library director to be able to demonstrate the library's value to the parent organization. Discussions of the University's "return on investment" (ROI) for the funds provided to the library must be made in easily-articulated, quantitative terms that focus on outputs and results, rather than on our traditionally-reported input measures. In this presentation, I report from the perspective of an academic library director on the findings of a study undertaken at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to determine the return on the University's investment in its library by developing a quantitative measure focused on the library's impact on campus-wide initiatives, as represented by the contribution of access to digital content to the successful application for extra-mural (i.e., grant) funding. The study confirmed the benefits of using electronic resources and demonstrated their impact on research productivity over a 10-year period. The results of this study, believed to be the first of its kind, represent the first piece of the answer to the challenge of demonstrating quantitatively the university's total return from its investment in its library.

Service is Sovereign: Strategic Change and the Future of Library Services

Title: Service is Sovereign: Strategic Change and the Future of Library Services

Authors: Walter, Scott; Kaufman, Paula

Abstract / Summary: The academic library of the 21st century will be distinguished by the scope and quality of its service programs. Fundamental changes in the academic and scholarly environment demand new approaches to defining core library services and to building capacity among our staff to deliver those services. In this presentation, we discuss the concept of the "service turn" and its significance for the future of academic libraries, and describe emergent models for service programs in U.S. academic libraries.
