Pilot Project: Chemical Waste Minimization in the Educational Laboratory: Final Report

Title: Pilot Project: Chemical Waste Minimization in the Educational Laboratory: Final Report

Abstract / Summary: During Calendar Year 1999, the Illinois Waste Management and Research Center
(WMRC), a state agency, and Argonne National Laboratory-East (Argonne), a federal
research facility, jointly conducted a pilot project entitled "Chemical Waste Minimization in
the Educational Laboratory." Four Chicago area secondary schools voluntarily participated
in this Pilot Project. The purpose of the Pilot Project was to promote the integration of
waste minimization and 'pollution prevention (WM&P2) strategies within secondary schools
by presenting microscale chemistry lectures and demonstrations to high school chemistry
teachers and by performing chemical vulnerability assessments within high school
chemistry laboratories.

Pollution Prevention and Business Management. Curricula for Schools of Business and Public Health. Volume 1: Modules 1-3

Title: Pollution Prevention and Business Management. Curricula for Schools of Business and Public Health. Volume 1: Modules 1-3

Authors: Bierma, Thomas J.; Waterstraat, Francis L.

Abstract / Summary: These instructional modules are based on the premise that sustained economic development is
dependent upon sustained protection ofthe environment. They also reflect the fact that preventing
waste is far more cost effective than managing the waste once it is generated. Pollution prevention
not only offers businesses a competitive opportunity, it is a natural extension of sound management
practices. Incorporating pollution prevention into business management and government regulation
will enhance longterm economic prosperity.
